James Conlon, Conductor

JAMES CONLON has conducted more than 225 performances of 19 operas at the Met since his 1976 debut leading Die Zauberflöte, including the company premieres of Susannah and Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk as well as telecasts of Semiramide and Tosca. He returns this season to lead Aida and the world premiere of Picker’s An American Tragedy. A New York native, he is a regular guest conductor with many major North American and European orchestras, is currently music director of the Ravinia Festival, and has been music director of the Cincinnati May Festival since 1979. Next season he becomes music director of the Los Angeles Opera. His previous positions include principal conductor of the Paris Opera (1995-2004), music director of the City of Cologne where he was principal conductor of the Gürzenich Orchestra and chief conductor of the Cologne Opera (1989-2002), and music director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic (1983-1991).
