Prelude: Prelude - The Norns (or Fates) gather on a rocky mountaintop. They weave a rope in and among themselves, telling the story of the Ring and Alberich's curse. The rope breaks, and they are unable to tell what the future holds. Frightened, they vanish.

Siegfried and Brünnhilde emerge from their cave in the early dawn. Siegfried decides to go and seek adventure, and he and Brünnhilde bid each other farewell. She gives him her horse, Grane, to ride. In return he gives her the Nibelung's Ring as a pledge of his love. Siegfried leaves, and Brünnhilde stays on her mountain for await his return.
