Part I, scene i: Spring, 1809. A morose Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, visiting the Rostovs on business, broods in his room on a moonlit night. He overhears the cheerful exchange between Natasha and her cousin Sonya, and it buoys his spirits. He feels an attraction to the charming Natasha.
